Week #2 of the open water season! May 20-26, 2024

Water temps: 55-59 in the main basins, touching 60 in the bays

Another up and down week on the Big V!! The week started with cold, rain and even more rain. I would guess the lake has risen 6” if not more! At the end of the week we got big winds and sunny skies and that has seemed to turn the fishing around finally!

Our best bites have been out deep in 15-25 FOW during the morning and midday and then moving shallow on wind blown rock piles and points in 10-15 FOW.

During the day, a Lindy rig tipped with a leech or minnow has been consistently catching fish. In typical Vermilion fashion, you have to catch your fair share of small fish to get the nicer eaters! Focus on the holes next to islands and fish the mud.

Once evening rolls around we have been moving shallow and fishing wind blown rock piles and points in 10-15 FOW with slip bobbers and leeches. This is producing the nicest fish by far and has been the most consistent bite. I have also heard great reports of throwing small plastics and catching plenty of eater sized walleye in the same places!

I expect the fishing to do nothing but get better. We have a very consistent weather forecast with a steady warming trend and the fishing is only getting better! Bobber time is just around the corner and some of the best fishing of the year is ahead. You won’t want to miss out!!

Always fun having new walleye anglers in the boat! Got them on their first walleye and others on their first smallmouth! Experienced fishermen and new anglers alike are always welcome at Fishing with Z Guide Service!!!

I have availability remaining for the rest of the summer! Give me a call or text @ (218) 404-9200 to book your trip today!!
