Week #1 of the open water season! May 13-19, 2024
Water temps: 54-57 in the main basins, touching 60 in the bays
What an interesting week it was on the Big V!! The week started with the same bite as opening weekend. Fishing deep holes close to rock structure was by far our best bite during the day. In the evenings we were getting high quality fish up shallow in Pike bay throwing a bobber or a jig with a minnow.
As the week progressed, the warmer temps seemed to make the fish want to push shallow, but the cold nights were keeping them deep or stuck in between. We continue to find a lot of small fish and reasonable sized eaters in the deep water.
This week we focused on deep holes in 30-45’ of water. Yes, you read that right. 1/4 ounce and 3/8 ounce jigs tipped with big minnows were our baits of choice and we caught a ton of fish. The mid day seemed to be our best time in the deep spots, we caught a lot of 15-17” fish from 11-2. During the evening we fished a lot of points in 4-7’ of water with bobbers and jigs and caught a lot of really nice fish.
As the end of the week approached the nicer fish were gone from the deep water but the small eaters were still there as of Saturday the 18th. The guys that figured out the shallow bite on Friday the 17th have been catching a lot of really nice fish and more than enough slot fish to go around. I am now focusing all of my attention to the shallow bobber bite and I am expecting that to run through mid to late June. We really need some very warm days to push all of the nice fish up into the rocks.
