Week #5 of the open water season! June 11 – 17, 2024

Water temps: 64-68 degrees, warmer on sunny days with no wind.

We saw another week pass on the Big V and the bite remains steady. It’s not on fire due to the large bug hatches we are experiencing right now, but with some patience and determination you can find enough fish to have a great day on the water!!!! You have to keep moving and try to find active fish.

Our best technique is still the trusty bobber and leech. Floating a leech on or around rock piles and points in 5-15’ has produced the most action for us. We aren’t trying to over complicate things right now. Most rock piles we are checking have a good amount of fish up on top with larger quantities off the edges in 12-15’ of water. The fish on top are ready to eat and the ones off the edge are a little slower and might even take a Lindy rig pulled through them to go. Don’t be afraid to throw a small paddletail around as well to trigger more of a reaction bite.

Over all the bite is good. Moving around and finding those active fish is the biggest key. Catching a few fish on each spot is not uncommon and by the end of the day you should end up with a good mess of fish for the grease!

As always this time of year, tons of smallies are mixed in on these rock piles and points. A slip bobber and a leech is a fantastic option but your soft plastic of choice and top water baits can provide endless fun on artificials!
